Alliance For A Healthy Orange County (AHOC)
Orange County Obesity Prevention Plan (OCOPP)

About Us

For the past three years NuPAC has worked with its partners to develop the O.C. Obesity Prevention Plan. This plan of action was made to address obesity in O.C. which has the second highest costs associated with overweight, obesity, and physical inactivity in California - an estimated cost of more than $3 billion. NuPAC has secured funding through the  Health Funders Partnership of Orange County (HFPOC) with a two year grant to implement the O.C. Obesity Prevention Plan

.

Facts

  • O.C. has the second highest cost associated with obesity, overweight, and physical inactivity in California, more than 3 billion dollars are spent (CCPHA).

  • Percentage of overweight children and adolescents has more than tripled compared to 30 years ago (CDC).

  • Nearly 66% of adults and 34% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese (CDC).

  • Experts say that by 2015 75% of Americans will be overweight (Johns Hopkins).

  • Due to increasing rates of obesity, unhealthy eating habits, and physical inactivity, we may see the first generation of children that will be less healthy and have a shorter life expectancy than their parents (Office of the Surgeon General).

Our Environment

  • The places where people live, learn, work, and play affect their health and the health of their communities.
  • Our  environments have a profound impact on us.  Influencing the policies that impact these environments is a crucial step in preventing and reversing the childhood obesity epidemic.
The O.C plan tackles obesity by focusing and identifying two areas of action in these sectors:

  1. State and Local Government

  2. Families

  3. Health Insurers & Providers

  4. Schools

  5. Employers & Worksites

  6. Food & Beverage Industry

  7. Entertainment & Professional Sports

Targeted Planned Cities:

The O.C. plan will target environmental, policy and system changes in at least 2 cities over the next two years. Now through a process, a readiness matrix, and city proposals we will be narrowing it down to only two cities from these 6 targeted cities.

Our goal is that the chosen cities will develop and implement a city-wide obesity prevention plan that focuses on system, institutional or environmental change. We will be awarding a mini grant of up to $30,000 to the selected cities to assist in the implementation and planning of local plan activities.

(  San Clemente and Placentia were awarded grants)
